Rainbow Shells Pillow | Free Crochet Pattern

If you love color as much as me you’ll love today’s free crochet pattern for the Rainbow Shells Pillow Cover.

Awhile back I made a rainbow baby blanket. It was one of those “just because” projects when you need something fun and mindless to do. (Baby blankets are my go-to when I need to get my crojo back.)

Anyhoo, when I shared the finished picture on social media a friend messaged me immediately and asked if I could make a pillow version. My friends inspire so many of my designs!

The Rainbow Shells Pillow Cover is a pretty quick and easy crochet pattern. Simple enough for an advanced beginner. If you can double crochet, you can make this pillow cover!

7 dc in same stitch

Shell Cluster:

Round 4: *7 dc in next v st, sc in ch-3 space, 7 dc in next v st (corner shell cluster made); sc in the 4th dc of the shell below (making sure to sc around the ch 5); repeat from * around 3 times; (4 corner shell clusters, 4 sc)

(Your work should resemble a four leaf clover at this point.)

Change color.

Round 5 (v stitch foundation row): Ch4, dc in same stitch (first V stitch made); *ch 5, V st cluster in sc in center of next corner shell cluster**; ch 5, v st in next sc; repeat from * 3 times stopping last repeat at **; ch 2, dc in 3rd chain of starting ch-4 to join. (4 v st clusters, 4 v sts)

Round 6: (shell row) *Shell in next v st, sc in 4th dc of shell below (working over ch), shell cluster in next corner V stitch cluster, sc in 4th dc of shell below; repeat from * around working shell clusters in each corner, and shells on each the side. (4 shell clusters, 4 shells)

Change color.

Rounds 7-17: Repeat pattern, alternating between V stitch foundation row and shell row (see rows 5 and 6), changing colors after each shell row. The V stitches/shells on the sides of the piece will increase with each row.

(After round 17 you will have 4 corner v stitch clusters and 7 v sts in between each cluster.)

Round 18: Ch 1, *{2sc in next v st; in next ch-5 sp work (2 sc, sc in 4th dc of shell below, 2 sc)} 7 times; in corner v st cluster work (2 sc in v st, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-3 sp, 2 sc in next v st); in next ch-5 sp work (2 sc, sc in 4th dc of shell below, 2 sc); repeat from * 3 times, sl st to first sc to join.

Repeat process to make two square panels.

To Join

Lineup your two squares and starting in one corner, sl st together in each sc around until you’ve joined three sides. Insert pillow form. Sl st to join remaining side of pillow cover. Cut yarn and weave in ends.

Voila!

Additional photos to show color contrast:

I didn’t realize that my “purple” was technically blue until I finished the project. Depending on the lighting and in contrast to the “blue” I chose it looks very purple.

Free Flamingo Graphghan Crochet Pattern

Flamingos are so in right now and I’ve been infected with flamingo fever. So I thought, what better subject for my next free crochet graph pattern? This flamingo graphghan would be perfect for a beach house or vacation home!

Flamingo Crochet Pattern Graph

Flamingo Graphghan - Free Crochet Pattern

This graph is large at 66 x 100 tiles. Depending on the yarn, hook, and stitch that you choose, this blanket could easily be large enough for a bed. Not up for the challenge? I’ve also designed a smaller version that would make a great lapghan or baby blanket.

You can find the free c2c written instructions and full graph below. An ad-free printable version is also available in my shop. Paid pattern includes 1 PDF with both graph and written c2c instructions. Graph has also been broken into 6 larger parts for your convenience.

New to Crochet Graphs?

A variety of stitches can be used to crochet a graph, the most popular being the corner to corner method. If you’re having trouble or have never done a c2c project before you may find the below articles helpful.

  • corner to corner for beginners
  • three ways to crochet a graph
  • decreasing in corner to corner
  • getting rid of gaps in c2c
  • how to estimate yardage for a graphghan

Join my Facebook Group

I love designing graphs but I don’t have time to crochet all the graphs that I design. If you finished the graph please make sure to show me! I have a new Facebook group just for fans of Psychedelic Doilies where you can show of your finished projects.

Make sure to answer the two entry questions or your request will be denied after 24 hours. Join the group now. You can also tag on me on Instagram @psychedelicdoilies .

Check out this beautiful finished version sent in by a reader. Looooove it. She used worsted weight cotton and a corner to corner stitch. I’m not sure what size hook she used but her blanket turned out at least seven feet long!

c2c Graph Flamingo Blanket Crochet Pattern

Here’s another finished blanket completed by a reader. I do not know the details of her project but aren’t the color choices dreamy?

Parks and Rec Cal – Week 12

I can’t believe this is the last week of our crochet along. It’s like the gang is breaking up all over again.

Leslie Knope falling in pit.

And for the last panel, we pay homage to the thing that started it all. The pit.

Parks and Rec CAL - The Pit Graphghan

When I decided to do a Parks CAL I knew almost immediately that I wanted to include the green bench. We first see it in season one sitting beside the abandoned pit.

And later Leslie, being the sentimental angel that she is, brings it to her office.

To me it’s such an iconic symbol for the show. Surprisingly, Google does not agree with me because I had an impossible time finding photos or references to the sacred bench.
