Die Hard Christmas CAL Week 3

The Walkie Talkies

Walkie talkies played a huge roll in this holiday classic so of course we needed a festive pair for our blanket.

Bloody Feet

Okay. so I refused to add a real photo of this scene because … ick. But I do love that the blood adds a red, Christmasy element to this panel.

The Ventilation Duct

“Come out to the coast, we’ll get together, have a few laughs.”

There are a lot of Christmas versions of this photo on the internet and I couldn’t resist. Also, COULD YOU NOT JUST DIE AT THAT CHEST HAIR. I was looking forward to this panel more than any other in the CAL. I had some left over fluffy yarn from my Rocky Horror CAL and it was just perfect.

Minimizing Gaps in Corner to Corner (C2C)

One of the most frequently asked questions I get during a crochet along is “Why do I have holes in my c2c?”. If you have gaps in your corner to corner stitch you’re not alone and – good news – you’re perfectly normal! The traditional c2c stitch naturally creates gaping between stitches but I can tell you how to fix it and it’s super easy.

Getting Rid of Holes in C2C

Now, those holes aren’t hurting anybody and you’re free to leave them but if, like me, you’re a bit of a perfectionist about your graphghans then you can completely get rid of the gaping in your work with a simple tweak to your c2c stitch.

The reason you see the gaps in your work is because of the starting chain. Those holes in corner to corner are made when we work our DC or HDC in the starting chains from the previous row. No amount of tightening your tension can fix that problem. So what’s a hooker to do? The solution is pretty straight forward – just reduce your starting chains!

The Secret to C2C With No Gap

Traditional c2c using double crochet most commonly begins with a chain 6 and works a DC in the 4th chain from the hook and a DC in the remaining two stitches for increasing. Regular stitches start with a chain 3 and work 3 DC in the chain space below.

Reducing those chains sequences by just one will make a big difference in your finished project. I recommend a chain 5 increase and a chain 2 regular stitch for dramatically reducing the holes in your work.

Mini Corner to Corner (c2c)

Mini c2c is worked in the same way as traditional corner to corner but uses half double crochet stitches in place of double crochet. Typically mini c2c instructions say to begin with a chain 5, working a HDC in the second chain from the hook and the remaining two chains. Regular stitches in the row start with a chain 2 and work 3 HDC in the chain space below.

To minimize your holes in mini c2c use a chain 4 on increase stitches, working a HDC in each of the 3 chains below the hook and a single chain 1 on regular stitches. Works like magic!

Chain 6 increase with chain 3 stitch compared to chain 5 increase with chain 2 stitch.

One Warning

Decreasing your chain stitches will cause your final project to be smaller! So it’s not a method you can switch to in the middle of a project. In the picture above you can see the serious size difference when reducing your starting chain by just one.

So that’s it. Easy peasy, right?

Week Two Panels

This week we have two new panels and they’re both related to this classic Christmas scene. (What? I saw a Santa in there somewhere.)

First up, the elevator. John McClane pries open the door to the elevator, props it open with an ax, attaches C4 to a computer monitor and … Geronimo, Mother F@$&er. Which brings us to our next panel.

Nakatomi Plaza! I am particularly infatuated with this panel. The design and finished project make my heart swoon a little. Innit beautiful?

Die Hard Christmas CAL Week 1

Before I get into the week one panels, take a look at the beautiful pre-released title banner.

Die Hard Christmas Blanket Crochet Along

I designed this simple banner in black and white originally but the second I altered the colors to be red and green it put the BIGGEST smile on my face. Finally Die Hard is getting the Christmas credit it deserves!

Week 1

Two panels were released for week one of the crochet along – a biggun and a littlin.

The Bear

That’s right, THE bear. The giant teddy that John McClane carries through the airport and then leaves in the limo with ole Argyle.

Which brings us to our next panel – The Limo.

The valiant stretch that saves the day and takes out Theo in the fake ambulance.

Rocky Horror CAL Week 5

It’s the last week and grand finale of our Rocky Horror blanket crochet along! Click here to see previous updates.

Three panels were released in the last update, bringing our Transylvanian dreams to a close.

3. And last but not least, the iconic Rocky Horror lips.

I can’t believe it’s over! We covered 13 panels in just 5 weeks. Whew! I absolutely love how it turned out. I’ve never done a character blanket before in any of my other crochet alongs but the pairing of all the couples in Rocky Horror made it a perfect fit for this graphghan.
